Sono-Somatic Immersion
Have you ever taken the time to fully immerse yourself in silence, finding solace in the quiet while luxuriating in a hot bath? It's an experience that gives your ears respite from the unrelenting barrage of sounds that surround us daily. If you haven't tried it yet, perhaps you should. For through the act of listening, we discover the art of feeling. When we tune into the radio, we invite the touch of sound into our lives. Similarly, when we turn on our awareness, we open ourselves up to the touch of our inner world. This is where the concept of Sono-Somatic Immersion comes into play—an amalgamation of listening both outwardly and inwardly.
As a lifelong musician, I stumbled upon The Feldenkrais Method® while grappling with performance-induced injuries. And what I discovered was truly revelatory. Anything we do repeatedly becomes a practice—a practice that shapes our bodies, our minds, and our lives. Recognizing this daunting truth is the first step towards lasting, profound change. This change begins by deepening the understanding of oneself by developing a keen awareness of where we currently stand. Whether it's knowing what we no longer desire or embracing our aspirations, this internal sense is the foundation upon which conscious transformation is built.
Pattern interruption is a crucial ingredient in personal growth, healing, and change—ultimately forming the essence of Sono-Somatic Immersion. Much like The Feldenkrais Method®, this modality cultivates a heightened awareness of our actions in the present moment. By listening to our bodies and minds, we are able to consciously choose to proceed, shift our direction, or even halt altogether.
In the realm of Sono-Somatic Immersion, we embark on a journey to uncover the pleasure of listening. First, through a verbally guided lesson called Awareness Through Movement® and then through the medium of live music. It is through live music that we may be able to access a more immediate and profound level of our awareness. Together, with our inward (and outward) listening, we can form a conduit for self-discovery and transformation—it is here that we are plumbing the very depths of where touch and thought meet our inner selves.
In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, "Be the change you want to see." This profound wisdom highlights that the only way to bring about change is by embodying it. And before lasting change can occur, one must first approximate a profound sense of self. This sense, this sensation, is the truth that lies within us—it can serve as the tipping point before committing to new practices and becoming truly "changed."
So, if you find yourself yearning for a reprieve from the constant sensory overload, consider the principles of Sono-Somatic Immersion. Through embracing the power of sound and sensation, we can embark on a journey of self-discovery, self-healing, and profound transformation. It is through this conscious merging of our external and internal worlds that we embark on a path towards a richer and more fulfilling life experience.
